If you haven’t heard the news, rumors have been circulating about the critically acclaimed Witcher 3 coming to the Nintendo Switch. Now I know that we get millions of game related rumors on a daily basis *cough* Half-Life 3 *cough*, there seems to be some merit to this one. According to ResetEra user “Jim_Cacher”, the Witcher 3 is already circulating around many retailers with the game’s case prominently showcasing the Switch logo.  Whether or not this is true, the question is how could this work? Considering the size, and shear power the game demands, many of us still question if it’s even possible. After a bit of research, here’s how the Witcher 3 could actually work on the Switch.

Port

The most obvious way that the Witcher 3 would come to the Switch would be through a port. This would make the most sense, and has been common with demanding Switch titles in the past. With demanding titles like Skyrim, Doom, and Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus porting over extremely well, who’s to say that the Witcher couldn’t do the same. While it may require more power than the aforementioned titles, through proper optimization and tweaking the game could play very well. When it comes to the size of the game, developers could end up utilizing 2 cartridges (much like Red Dead Redemption 2) to install the vital content then have a game cartridge separate. With how well this method worked with RDR2, this could be the solution here as well.

Now what happens if porting can’t work? Well, there’s a plan B!

Streaming

While it hasn’t been publicized in the Western market, Nintendo has been working on a streaming service for more titles that typically wouldn’t be possible on the Switch. Most notably, Resident Evil 7 is currently available for the Nintendo Switch through this approach. While it isn’t the most perfected route at the moment, Nintendo may have created incredible advancements in the service that they could announce at E3. While this route is a possibility, we hope they forgo it due to the requirement of a fast internet service; and it would ruin the benefit of being able to play the Witcher 3 on the go!

As it stands, a Switch release is still only a rumor so we’ll keep you posted with updates going forward. With CD Projekt Red heavily focusing on Cyberpunk 2077, which will be a huge focus at E3, it is unlikely that any real news will come out until later this year; considering that the release is set for late 2019 if the rumors are true.
