Nintendo Addresses Joy-Con “Drifting”: Free Repairs?

Nintendo may be covering your joy-con drift issue; no cost to you.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last few weeks, you’ve heard about the Nintendo Switch’s issue with the drifting joy-cons. The issue has been popping up on new and old systems alike, and causing headaches across the board. While early reports have stated that Nintendo was reluctant to fix the issue, recent reports tell another story.

Vice obtained an internal Nintendo customer support memo stating that support members should offer free repairs for the afflicted controllers regardless of warranty status. Beyond that, users who have already paid for the repairs are being offered refunds for the work.

“Customers will no longer be requested to provide proof of purchase for Joy-Con repairs,” reads a line from the memo. “Additionally it is not necessary to confirm warranty status. If a customer requests a refund for a previously paid Joy-Con repair […] confirm the prior repair and then issue a refund.”

Nintendo had this to say in regards to the Joy-Con drift issues:

“At Nintendo, we take great pride in creating quality products and we are continuously making improvements to them [..] We want our consumers to have fun with Nintendo Switch, and if anything falls short of this goal we always encourage them to visit http://support.nintendo.com so we can help.”

This news comes after the announcement of a legal team going after Nintendo in a class-action case for those affected by the issue.
