Spectrum looks to offer more than just a challenging platforming experience.

Set in a beautiful minimalistic abstract world, Spectrum follows a small dark creature that looks to reach the exit portals. To escape, you must traverse various colorful blocks that prove to be way more dangerous than they look. The concept is simple enough, however, successfully reaching the exit portal is quite the opposite.

Gameplay in Spectrum is rather simple to grasp, but mastering is another story. One button will ascend you, while another will lower you to avoid the various obstacles that you’ll come across. Primarily you’ll need to avoid various colored blocks that maneuver around the map, with the occasional maps that have you locked in a circular type cage, dodging platforms that appear out of the background. While it sounds simple enough, it’s anything but simple. Maps tend to be incredibly challenging, testing your ability quickly dodge the various colorful platforms looking to take you out.

While Spectrum offers enough for those looking for a challenge, after completing a few levels the game starts to lose its luster. Maps, while offering slightly different obstacles, feel rather similar. While you can look to complete the 3 bonus objectives on each level, which include no damage and collecting the small orbs, there’s little point besides bragging rights on the leaderboard. Don’t get me wrong, the game is fun in intervals; offering enough challenge to make it a game that you won’t complete in one sitting.

Where Spectrum shines the brightest is the game’s overall presentation. Spectrum offers a beautiful visual showcase that will ensue an eyegasm for those playing. The varying color schemes of the various worlds you come across are a gorgeous sight to behold. Spectrums obscure, yet incredibly fitting, soundtrack complements the game’s abstract visuals in a strange way. The game’s soundtrack at first seems obscure, yet it’s incredibly fitting; and somewhat relaxing. Matching the game’s minimalistic approach visually, the soundtrack is simple yet feels just right.

At its core, Spectrum offers a fun platforming experience. The game is simple enough to learn to play, yet incredibly difficult to master. The problem is after you’ve completed a few levels, many levels fail to stand out, making it difficult to want to complete further levels. What the game lacks in gameplay depth, it makes up for in its incredible presentation. With gorgeous colorful worlds, and unique audio, you’ll end up just going into the levels to listen to the soundtrack and stare at the vibrantly colored worlds.
