What Switch game are you looking forward to in 2023?

The Nintendo Switch is coming on its sixth year and things aren’t slowing down as the Switch has another strong year coming. While Tears of the Kingdom is on most people’s minds, there’s even more games to keep on your radar in 2023. Whether we’re talking about remasters, new multiplayer titles, or sequels, Nintendo has a strong list of games to keep you hooked on your Switch. The games on this list aren’t going to be in any particular order because you can’t rank what’s not out yet.

Super Bomberman R 2

Super Bomberman R 2 Super Bomberman R 2 one game I personally can’t wait to get my hands on in 2023. Super Bomberman R was the first title that I played on my Switch back at launch, and to say I was hooked is an understatement. The frantic and fun gameplay that Bomberman is known for looks to return with even more content to enjoy such as new modes, creation features, and new characters, which is probably my favorite part. Super Bomberman R brought in a variety of classic Konami characters from Silent Hill, Zone of the Enders, Castlevania, and even Metal Gear Solid. From the announcement trailer, even more characters will come to Super Bomberman R 2 so I can’t wait to see who gets added in. Super Bomberman R 2 does not have a set release date but is set to release in 2023.

Tales of Symphonia: Remastered

Back in the day it seemed like everyone was playing Tales of Symphonia, and they always talked about how great the game was. I never got around to playing the game, not because I wasn’t interested, because I just never got around to it because it released in such a stacked year for gaming (GTA: Vice City, Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Splinter Cell, and much more). The Tales Franchise continuously offers incredible RPG experiences like Tales of Vesperia, Tales of Berseria, or the recently released Tales of Arise. Being able to go back and play through one of the most popular Tales titles on the Switch is something I’m more than excited about for 2023.

Disney Illusion Island

So I wouldn’t blame you if you don’t remember this one as it was announced at a Nintendo Direct back in September, and some huge games have come out the last few months, but Disney Illusion Island looks great. Personally, it gives me vibes of the Mickey Mouse series that came out in 2013 and get new specials each year. While this game doesn’t look to emulate that art style, it looks funny and outright fun. With up to 4-player co-op, this looks like a great game to play either by yourself or with family and friends.

Pikmin 4

So the most recent Pikmin games haven’t been bad, but they haven’t been what Pikmin really is. Now that we’re getting Pikmin 4, I’m looking forward to that difficult strategy style gameplay the series is known for. I’m not looking for the difficulty because I like swearing at the screen, but there was nothing more rewarding than collecting those difficult parts of your ship after overcoming the most difficult challenges like the giant ladybugs. While we don’t have much in terms of details, I can’t wait to get my hands on Pikmin 4 in 2023.

Fire Emblem Engage

Fire Emblem Three Houses was my first entry into the Fire Emblem franchise since the original title on the Gameboy Advance; and while I loved Heroes, it’s not the same as a true Fire Emblem experience. Fire Emblem Engage looks to bring back a lot of cool features while blending in new features to make this game feel like an incredible entry to the series. The ring summonings are something that I want to see in action as they allow you to merge current heroes with characters from Fire Emblem past like Marth and Lucina just to name a few. Combat also brings back the weapon triangle which was absent from Three Houses so you’ll get a true Fire Emblem experience. The best part is that we won’t have to wait long since Engage releases January 20, so there’s not much of a wait to get your hands on the latest game.

Octopath Traveler 2

Octopath Traveler is a phenomenal game that deserves a lot more recognition for the quality of gameplay, the abundance of content to play, and just the resurgence of HD 2D RPG’s. Now Octopath Traveler 2 is only a few weeks away, and it’s releasing on PC, PS5, and Switch; but we’re focusing on the Switch for now. Now this game is a standalone experience so if you haven’t played the first game you’re not missing out story wise. With 8 new characters, new gameplay mechanics, and a new world to explore Octopath Traveler 2 is one game to look out

Fatal Frame 4: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse

Fatal Frame falls under a category of horror games with Siren where they are just outright scary, and I love it! So much like Tales of Symphonia, Fatal Frame 4 isn’t a new game but a Remake that was released back in 2008 for the Wii. Graphically, this game looks much cleaner and a whole lot scarier. Like prior Fatal Frame titles, you’re fighting off ghosts with the Camera Obscura on some creepy island secluded from society and it’s just outright creepy. Fatal Frame 4 doesn’t have a set date, but as long as I can get my hands on it before Halloween, I’ll be happy!

Kirby Return to Dreamland Deluxe

Much like Fatal Frame, Kirby Return to Dreamland Deluxe is a remake of a Wii title from 2011 being remade for the Switch. I’m excited about this one because Kirby has finally been getting the attention it deserves after the release of Kirby and the Forgotten Lands. Kirby titles after continuously fun, and offer some cool gameplay mechanics. After going back and playing the N64 title, the ability to combine powers from the enemies you absorb just seems ahead of its time. Here’s hoping that 2023 gives Kirby the credit Kirby deserves.

Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

Expect to see and here about this one on everyone’s list because Tears of the Kingdom is a big deal. With Breath of the Wild releasing with the Switch way back in 2017, we’ve been waiting for a new mainline game for a while; and the excitement is completely justified. Breath of the Wild was a game that influenced many games, and had a major impact on the gaming industry as a whole. Now I’m going to be honest, as a skeptic when it comes to big game releases because I grew up in the era where a large portion of those big games you couldn’t wait to get your hands on ended up being flops. I say this because the first game was so incredibly well crafted, I can’t imagine how they can 1 up it; but I have faith that they can. With a May 12th release date, we don’t have Ling to wait.
